Lyophilised Powder

Also known as: Freeze-dried powder; Lyophilizate

Dry, porous cake or powder produced by freeze-drying an aqueous peptide solution; the standard supplied form of research peptides.

DEFINITION

A lyophilised powder is the solid residue that remains after an aqueous solution of a peptide has been freeze-dried. It typically presents as a fluffy, porous cake or as a fine amorphous powder, and may include bulking or stabilising excipients such as mannitol or trehalose depending on the manufacturing process.

The porous structure resulting from ice-crystal sublimation provides a high surface area, which enables rapid and complete reconstitution when sterile diluent is added. Lyophilised powders are typically shipped and stored between –20 °C and 8 °C to maximise long-term stability.
