Glucagonostatic

Property of suppressing glucagon secretion from pancreatic α-cells, contributing to reduced hepatic glucose output.

DEFINITION

Glucagonostatic describes an agent that suppresses glucagon secretion from pancreatic α-cells. GLP-1 receptor activation reduces glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner and reduces hepatic glucose output as a result.

The glucagonostatic effect complements the insulinotropic effect and jointly explains the glucose-lowering pharmacology of GLP-1 receptor agonists.

WHY IT MATTERS

The glucagonostatic effect is the α-cell counterpart to the insulinotropic effect for incretin-class pharmacology.
