GLOSSARY

Gastric Emptying

Rate at which stomach contents pass into the duodenum; slowed by GLP-1 receptor activation via vagal pathways.

DEFINITION

Gastric emptying is the rate at which food and liquid contents exit the stomach into the small intestine. It is a major determinant of postprandial glucose kinetics and of satiety signalling from gastric distension.

GLP-1 receptor activation slows gastric emptying via vagally-mediated pathways. This is a well-documented pharmacological effect of GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Semaglutide and contributes both to reduced postprandial glucose excursions and to increased satiety.

WHY IT MATTERS

Slowed gastric emptying is one of the principal peripheral pharmacological effects of GLP-1 receptor agonism.
